Social Media vs Traditional media

Well I guess the first question is, What does this have to do with your health? Well nothing really, but the story that follows has impacted my emotional health, positively.

It would almost seem like there is a war between social media and traditional media and many would argue that traditional media is losing. I would argue that there is a compromise between both. In today’s technological era much information is communicated through social media.  However, as effective as it is, it (social media)  would not survive independent of traditional media.  OK. So you know that already so let’s talk about the positive impact on me.

If you were to check out my profile on LinkedIn you would see that I work as a producer for McDonald Broadcasting on the Capital City Recap, with host, Michael Cohen. The show prides itself on looking at both sides of the news through interviews, an average of 4 per show. The show is absolutely interesting and you should check it out sometime and give feedback.  It’s not a call in show so it lacks the interaction that you get from social media – nothing new when it comes to traditional media. The host does however encourage the use of social media as a means of getting feedback. Now that’s what I call compromise. I have more exciting news.

Last Thursday I attended the Career Fair at MSU in the Breslin center and ended up having my picture taken and was interviewed by a reporter for the Communication Arts and Science Department. I felt pretty good about this, what are the odds I got chosen. It must be my media week. Four days later and I’m not sure what happened to the photo or the interview or where to look for it. With social media you take a picture in Instagram and upload it to internet on Facebook as fast as your network allows you. Don’t leave just yet, there’s more – the big finale.

True love never looked so good

More than a thousand words (Fun size)

Today i got a text through whatsapp from a friend in Jamaica and an email on Facebook that I was featured in one of the national newspaper. Well I wasn’t featured but my picture was there. Pretty awesome I thought. Celebrity status on a rise, I now need a TV spot and I’ll be complete. The newspaper featured a very good friend whose wedding I attended in August. Hadn’t it been for social media I wouldn’t have heard almost instantaneously of my presence in the Jamaica Observer. I’d say a week to never is how long it would take for me to find out.

In the end I’m happy and I thank both social and traditional media.

  1. Interesting blog… your emotional health status must be good.

It is also interesting that much traditional media, in this case newspapers, use Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube as avenues to get their news out and to fight for the attention younger readers.

    • Hi Dr. Foster Thanks for stopping by. First let me say congrats again to you and Mrs. Foster, glad I could share in the moment. There is a marriage between traditional media and social media. An interesting post that done by a colleague of mine, Brandon Nydell- “Let’s just be friends” looked at how Myspace new strategy is to allow users to use other social media sites to log in.
Dr. Foster as a scholar in the field of education and technology I extend the invite to share a blog with my audience every now and then.
